Jad Tamari (He/They) is a Palestinian-American graphic designer and painter. He is currently graduating from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), taking classes like figure painting and logo design. Jad's work focuses on an understanding of what makes art engaging and accessible. The painting side of Jad's work is more laid back and abstract, while the graphic design work has a serious look at politics and looking out for the little man.

I would like to show viewers artists who have inspired my work, from contemporary artists to artists from history who I have always loved. Once a week, I will feature one artist here whom I want to share about. This will change every Monday.

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is my favorite band, hands down. They are an Australian rock band that makes several albums in many different styles beyond rock. Their enormous catalog includes surf rock, folk, heavy metal, and electronic albums, including a spoken-word Spaghetti Western audiobook concept album. The six-member band has made so much that they normally make two to three albums a year. With 28 albums in their archive, they have music for every mood, which has earned them a ginormous audience.
I found this band late in high school and in my first year in college at Eastern Illinois University. I met a classmate and got close to them through our love of similar music, like indie bands such as Ginger Root and King Gizzard. During the first Thanksgiving break, I was still learning to drive, so to pass the time, I listened to every album they had and became a big fan.
I love their music videos as much as their music, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have some outstanding videos. Because they make so many different-sounding songs, each video has a different look. My favorite music video by the band is Deadstick. The song has a James Brown-like tone. Like "Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag" (Part 1), Deadstick starts with loud horns that make you want to shout and dance because they feel so good.
Another reason I can not get enough of this band is that multiple members sing throughout the song, especially my favorite member, Ambrose. At the start of the song, we hear Stu Mackenzie and Joey Walker singing. The video cuts to black-and-white footage of a man who washed up on the beachside and people singing and dancing on the island. My favorite part of Deadstick is when the music video cuts back to color for a moment I can only describe as happiness. My favorite band member, Ambrose Kenny-Smith, comes up dancing with other people. His voice is so high, but he sounds like he is having the time of his life. I really love this song and want to shout it out.
